The cultural barrier
In many Chinese and Taiwanese families, discussing online danger — or anything connected to mental health — carries deep shame. Asian American youth are more likely to internalize harm and far less likely to report victimization.
The intergenerational rift
Grandparents raised children without the internet. Parents got smartphones as adults. Teenagers have never known a world without them. Three generations, three digital realities, no shared language for what's happening online.

This initiative was born where a mother's lived experience met two decades of frontline child-safety expertise.
Grace Huang
American Born Chinese and Taiwanese. Mother of two. Child of immigrant parents. Grace started RISE Social — and is expanding it to the Mandarin-speaking community — because she lived the gap. She knows what it means to sit at a dinner table where certain things cannot be said, and to navigate American youth culture from inside a Chinese household. When parents suppress the influencer dream, she saw, children don't stop wanting it — they just pursue it without anyone watching. Her answer wasn't to ban the dream. It was to redefine it, and build a safe place to learn it well.

Retired Orange County Sheriff's Sergeant with 20+ years in law enforcement and child-safety education, and author of Parenting in the Digital World. One of the nation's most recognized voices on youth online safety, he has trained hundreds of thousands of parents, educators, and students. His work has been featured on KCAL LA, Fox Good Day LA, NBC, and CBS.
